Non-class based uses
To use works outside of class, teachers must acquire the rights. This is the case if the students are to perform protected works in front of an audience, if teachers publish photos on the school website or if they wish to show a film to all the students in the school, not just one class.
The school library is also not allowed to copy DVDs and CDs to avoid the costs of buying additional copies. The rights owners have also accommodated schools when it comes to non-class uses. For example, they allow full recordings of radio and television programmes to be stored in schools’ own media libraries. Students are also allowed to perform pieces of music and host school discos, but they cannot perform operas, operettas, musicals or films. The collective management organisation ProLitteris can provide you with more information.
