The classification tool
The IPI’s classification tool helps you to create a list of goods and services (LGS) and, ideally, to speed up the examination of your trade mark.
The classification tool is a useful aid to create an accurate list of goods and services (LGS) for your trade mark application. The online service allows you to:
- search for acceptable terms for goods and services;
- classify goods and services correctly;
- translate individual terms or complete lists into German, French, Italian or English; and
- compare different lists.
The classification tool checks your terms for consistency with the IPI’s database and a section of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) database aligned with the IPI, including the terms of the Nice Classification.
Tip
Use the classification tool to speed up the examination procedure. If the goods and services are largely marked as acceptable, your application will be subject to an early trade mark examination, which means it will be examined much more quickly.
Please note that the list of goods and services must be filed in an official Swiss language (German, French or Italian) when applying for a Swiss trade mark and in French for international applications.
Legal notice
The IPI’s classification tool is a free tool for creating, editing and verifying lists of goods and services (LGS). This does not constitute legal advice. Responsibility for the wording of the LGS lies exclusively with the applicant, even if they use the classification tool.
The use of the classification tool has no prejudicial effect. It does not guarantee a faithful translation or that there will be no objections to the list by the IPI or, in the case of applications for international registration, by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
