Switzerland remains the leader in innovation

Switzerland has been named the most innovative country in the world for the 14th consecutive year. On 26 September 2024, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) presented the Global Innovation Index (GII) in Geneva. The GII is the most renowned annual ranking of the innovative strength of individual countries. Switzerland has ranked first out of a current total of 133 countries since 2010.

The GII is based on approximately 80 indicators, divided into seven categories. Switzerland’s top spot is due in particular to the categories that concern innovation output (e.g. number of patents in relation to GDP). Switzerland has also improved in several categories relating to innovation input. Its greatest strength lies in its institutional environment, such as government effectiveness. Venture capital has declined, as in the previous year.

The GII is drawn up by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It measures innovation based on 80 criteria divided into the following categories: institutions; human capital and research; infrastructure; market and business sophistication; knowledge and technology outputs; and creative outputs. Innovation is a key driver of economic growth.
