Frequently asked questions about detention procedures for small consignments

Why is it the IPI and not the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security that conducts the procedures for detained small consignments?

Since the entry into force of the new federal act on the introduction of a simplified procedure on 1 July 2025, the IPI has been responsible for conducting the procedures for small consignments detained by customs. The aim of transferring this responsibility to the IPI is to free up resources for the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security so that it can concentrate on its core activities, which are checking parcels and identifying counterfeits.

Do the procedures also apply to goods detained in connection with tourist traffic?

No, goods detained in connection with tourist traffic, in particular those found in travellers’ luggage, are not subject to the two procedures (ordinary and simplified) relating to small consignments carried out by the IPI.
