The IPI is actively participating in the WIPO dialogue on intellectual property and artificial intelligence

04.06.2020 | IPI, Law and policy

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the technology at the centre of the fourth industrial revolution. It is already having an impact on daily life around the world, and equally is influencing intellectual property. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has published a Revised Issues Paper on Intellectual Property Policy and Artificial Intelligence. Within the framework of an open-ended process, this document sets out a list of the effects of AI on intellectual property policy and identifies the questions that policymakers need to ask themselves.

The IPI had the opportunity to comment on the first version of this document and welcomed the participation of Swiss stakeholders, in particular the Association of Swiss and European Patent Attorneys in Private Practice (VESPA/ACBSE), the Digital Law Center of the University of Geneva and the Innovation Law Chair of the University of Neuchatel. The 250 position papers received from Switzerland and around the world are available here.

The second session of the WIPO dialogue on intellectual property and artificial intelligence will be held, based on the new updated document, over three days from 7 to 9 July 2020 in the form of a virtual meeting, with a daily session scheduled between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. (CET) in order to reach the widest possible audience (conference information).

The IPI works closely with the Center for Intellectual Property & Competition Law (CIPCO) of the University of Zurich on the topic of AI and intellectual property.
