Switzerland is world champion of innovation again
In the Global Innovation Index 2018, Switzerland’s performance is outstanding. Our country ranks first in global and European rankings. Good ideas therefore pay off.
“Who invented it?” Switzerland enjoys an excellent international reputation when it comes to innovations, and this is reflected once more in figures. In a comparison between 126 countries, Switzerland has defended its top position yet again in the Global Innovation Index 2018 – for the eighth time running. In second and third positions are the Netherlands and Sweden. For the first time, China has achieved a ranking in the top 20, while the USA has slipped from rank four to rank six. The Global Innovation Index is published annually by Cornell University, INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organization.
Switzerland leads in IP
The index assesses the innovative strength of an economy based on 80 indicators. This includes such indicators as the registration rate for intellectual property, education expenditure and technological publications. Switzerland’s first place ranking is particularly pronounced in regard to patent and IP-based assessment criteria. According to the ranking, Switzerland is the worldwide leader in expenditure for research and development, and in the quality of local universities.
Confident management of IP
Confidently managing one’s own IP plays an important role in allowing innovations to have a good starting chance. Whoever anchors intellectual property in their company’s strategy protects their creations from counterfeiters and establishes an economic advantage. In Switzerland, individuals and companies can register inventions, trade marks and designs with the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property.
